What are the benefits of the energy management system?

The energy management system uses excess PV power to control the connected loads. This allows the SMARTFOX Pro to make the best possible use of the electricity it generates. SMARTFOX maximizes self-consumption.

What sets SMARTFOX apart from other energy management systems?

The SMARTFOX can charge electric vehicles, heat water, or be used as a load manager. We also offer free monitoring.

Which energy manager is right for me?

Would you like to charge your electric vehicle, heat water, and monitor your entire system? Then you need the SMARTFOX Pro Energy Manager.

If you just want to heat your water and don't need any monitoring features, the SMARTFOX Pro light is the perfect product for you.

What is smart sector coupling?

Smart sector coupling refers to the integration and control of a wide variety of components—such as water heating, solar power generation, heat pumps, electric vehicle charging stations, and many others—using an energy management system.

How does the SMARTFOX Pro work?

The SMARTFOX Pro automatically detects excess energy from your solar power system and prevents it from being fed into the grid by directing it to the appliances in your home that you have previously designated.

For example, you can use the surplus electricity to heat water, thereby storing energy in a cost-effective way. If you compare the costs you would otherwise incur for water heating with the revenue generated by feeding the surplus electricity into the grid, you can save a significant amount of money easily and without any extra effort, and become somewhat more independent of the energy market.

How much does the whole system cost?

The standard comprehensive package, which in many cases can help your solar power system reach profitability about 10 years sooner, costs approximately €1,500, including installation. In other words, it’s an additional investment that will definitely pay off.

Will I have to pay any ongoing costs?

No, there are NO additional ongoing costs for you.

Some licenses are valid for 10 years. You only need these licenses for larger systems (e.g., systems with two or more inverters).

How much does the web portal/app cost?

The “My SMARTFOX” web portal and the app are free of charge.

Can SMARTFOX be integrated into my existing system?

Yes! The SMARTFOX can be easily retrofitted.

Can SMARTFOX store energy from the solar power system?

The SMARTFOX cannot store energy from the photovoltaic system.

The SMARTFOX uses the excess PV power to control the connected loads and utilizes the power from the photovoltaic system for water heating or for charging electric vehicles.

What is the difference between SMARTFOX Pro and SMARTFOX Pro light devices?

Compared to the SMARTFOX Pro, the SMARTFOX Pro Light does not have monitoring capabilities, has 1 relay instead of 4, and fewer interfaces/inputs.

Which manufacturers (inverters, batteries, charging stations, heating elements, etc.) is SMARTFOX compatible with?

In principle, the SMARTFOX system can be used to read data from any inverter with the help of the SMARTFOX Energy Meter.

When will the installation of the energy manager pay for itself?

This is very easy to calculate. To do so, use our handy Ecocalc tool.

Can SMARTFOX also be used with hydroelectric power plants, wind turbines, or combined heat and power plants?

Yes, that is possible. In principle, the SMARTFOX just needs to be able to measure the excess power in order to trigger the control signal.

What devices can I control with the SMARTFOX?

SMARTFOX can control any device that is powered by electricity.

Some devices are less suitable for this (any device that runs for a set duration, i.e., non-interruptible loads), while others are more suitable (interruptible loads, such as heating elements).

Can I use the SMARTFOX to track my self-consumption?

By reading data from the inverter/battery and using its own measurements at the home feed-in point, SMARTFOX can calculate and display your home energy consumption.

Can I control my devices using the app or monitoring system?

Yes, all connected devices can be controlled manually via the app or the web portal.

Can SMARTFOX also be used as a load manager?

Yes, the SMARTFOX can use its relays to selectively shut down specific appliances when peak loads occur.

The SMARTFOX also monitors the home connection when controlling one or more charging stations.

Can I control SMARTFOX remotely?

Yes, the SMARTFOX can be controlled remotely via the app or monitoring system.

How can I delete my account and all my saved data?

How do I reset the SMARTFOX to its factory settings?

You can reset the energy manager directly on the SMARTFOX via the maintenance menu.

2. Technical Questions

How does SMARTFOX control heating elements?

SMARTFOX can control various heating elements in different ways:

 

Control via the analog output

Depending on the measured surplus, the energy manager’s analog output transmits a 4–20 mA (or 0–10 V) signal to a power controller. This controller is capable of continuously regulating a conventional heating element, thereby making optimal use of the excess energy.

Control via relay

Conventional heating elements can be activated or deactivated via the built-in relay contacts, depending on the available excess power.

 

SMARTFOX Ego Heater RS-485

The SMARTFOX Ego Heater is controlled via the RS-485 interface. This requires that the RS-485 interface is not already in use by other devices. No power controller is required for this control method. The Ego Heater is switched on in 500-watt increments up to a maximum of 3500W, depending on the surplus. ASKOMA AskoHeat+ (LAN / TCP)

SMARTFOX allows you to control AskoHeat+ heating elements from ASKOMA via a network (LAN / Modbus TCP). Depending on the model, these can be switched on at various levels. How does SMARTFOX control heat pumps?

SG-Ready-compatible heat pumps

SG-Ready-compatible heat pumps can be controlled via a relay contact. For more detailed information about this control option, the required components, and the necessary prerequisites, please refer to the manual. You can check the SG-Ready database to see if your heat pump has an SG-Ready contact.

Can wireless or Wi-Fi-enabled power outlets be controlled?

In principle, it is possible to use the relay contacts with various wireless applications. SMARTFOX acts as a contact trigger here, closing the dry contact once a specified threshold value is exceeded. This signal is then processed by the transmitter/receiver of the selected product.

It is currently not possible to control Wi-Fi-enabled power outlets directly.

Which devices can I control with the SMARTFOX?

SMARTFOX can control a wide variety of devices, such as heating elements, heat pumps, infrared panels, battery storage systems, and household appliances. Various interfaces are available for this purpose (4 relays, analog outputs 4–20 mA and 0–10 V, RS-485, Modbus TCP, and Modbus RTU).

Can SMARTFOX be combined with combined heat and power (CHP) plants?

Similar to the control of heat pumps, it is possible to control CHP units using SMARTFOX. If the CHP unit has a potential-free control input, it can be switched via a relay on the SMARTFOX. The energy manager thus sends a recommendation to the CHP unit to switch on when, for example, a large amount of energy is currently being drawn from the grid and the generated electrical energy can therefore be consumed directly within the building. The “load shedding” control behavior of the relays is suitable for this application.

Can SMARTFOX be used for dynamic active power limiting?

SMARTFOX can provide metering data for the utility connection point for certain inverter manufacturers (replacing smart meters). Dynamic output limitation can then be configured on the inverter. Please refer to the respective inverter manual to determine whether this feature is available.

How can I connect my solar power system/inverter? (Generation system)

There are several ways to integrate energy generators into the portal. Up to 5 inverters can be connected directly. The energy management system also functions independently of inverter communication.

Connection via Modbus TCP/RTU

If the inverter you are using is Modbus-compatible but is not yet available in the download section, SMARTFOX offers a universal Modbus TCP/RTU interface. In this case, the device’s relevant energy and power registers can be entered manually (the manufacturer’s Modbus registers are required). This requires a certain level of technical understanding and basic network knowledge. The installer should perform the configuration.

Alternatively, a SMARTFOX Energy Meter can be connected to the generator’s AC output to measure the power generated. The data is then transmitted in real time to the energy manager via an RS458 signal.

S0 interface

SMARTFOX also offers the option of importing data via an S0 interface. The SMARTFOX Pro is equipped with an S0 interface for this purpose. If multiple S0 signals need to be captured, they can be integrated via a SMARTFOX Meter and transmitted to the energy manager over the network. A SMARTFOX Meter can capture up to five S0 signals.

How can I integrate my battery storage system?

Most DC-coupled battery storage systems are read directly via the inverter. AC-coupled battery storage systems are integrated directly via the network (Modbus TCP). Instructions for integrating compatible systems can be found in the download section.

Can SMARTFOX control battery storage systems?

Battery management is typically handled by the connected inverter. SMARTFOX monitors the data provided.

With some manufacturers and models, it is possible to take full control of the battery management system. This offers various benefits for energy management (for example, consumer priorities can be allocated more flexibly).

Can SMARTFOX store energy?

The energy manager itself does not store energy. The system intelligently distributes energy throughout the home, utilizing various devices such as hot water boilers, buffer tanks, electric vehicles, or battery storage systems.

How does SMARTFOX help me avoid peak loads?

The maximum desired/permissible load can be set on the SMARTFOX. If this limit is reached, the connected loads are intelligently reduced.

This is done dynamically (e.g., charging stations) or statically via load shedding.

Can I display individual consumers in the monitoring system?

If certain appliances, such as washing machines, do not transmit their power and energy data directly, their usage can be monitored via a SMARTFOX Energy Meter. Up to 5 meters can thus be connected directly via RS485. It is also possible to integrate any S0 meters into the portal. An S0 input is located directly on the device. If multiple S0 meters are read, they can be recorded via a SMARTFOX Meter and transmitted to the portal.

Can heat meters and flow meters be integrated?

Yes, provided they have an S0 contact. An S0 input is located directly on the energy manager. If multiple S0 signals are read, they can be captured via a SMARTFOX meter and transmitted to the portal.

What is the maximum system size for which SMARTFOX can be used?

There is no defined kWp upper limit for the PV system. SMARTFOX is suitable for systems of all sizes at the 230/400 V level. The device’s available inputs and outputs are primarily designed for use in single-family homes and small and medium-sized businesses.

What certifications do the devices have?

All certificates, CE markings, applicable standards, and EU declarations of conformity can be found in the product data sheets and user manuals

Can SMARTFOX be used in any electrical system?

SMARTFOX is suitable for use in TN and TT systems at the 230/400 V level. The system can be operated in single-phase or three-phase mode. If SMARTFOX is used in a single-phase system, the phase must be connected to terminal “L1.” The current transformers for L2 and L3 remain unused.

What data protocols does SMARTFOX use for communication?

SMARTFOX supports a variety of data protocols and can therefore be easily connected to third-party devices or other smart home systems.

  • LAN/Wi-Fi network: Modbus TCP, SunSpec…
  • RS485/CAN: Modbus RTU, SunSpec…

How does SMARTFOX control charging stations?

SMARTFOX Pro Charger

The SMARTFOX Pro Charger is controlled via an RS-485 interface. This enables continuous regulation of vehicle charging using surplus PV power or dynamic curtailment in load management scenarios. The integrated 1-phase/3-phase switching ensures optimal utilization of the charging range.

SMARTFOX is compatible with a wide range of charging stations and controls them via the network or RS485. You can find all compatible charging stations in the compatibility list.

3. Installing the Energy Manager

Where is the energy manager installed?

The energy manager is typically installed in the main distribution panel or meter distribution panel of the system, since this is where the building’s main power line is measured via a current transformer. Installation in sub-distribution panels is possible, but it is important to note that the required current transformer cable can be extended by no more than 15 meters (to avoid measurement errors).

How is the measurement taken at the point of connection?

The included current transformers are installed on the building's power supply line and use inductive measurement to determine whether electricity is being consumed or supplied.

How should I install the current transformers?

For information on where to install the current transformers, please refer to the relevant installation and operating instructions for the energy manager.

Are the current transformers included in the scope of delivery?

Yes, depending on the product selected, the energy managers come with 80A or 100A current transformers.

What is the maximum power I can measure with the SMARTFOX?

The devices are available as standard with 80-amp or 100-amp current transformers; if higher currents need to be measured, additional current transformers must be used.

How much space does the control unit need in the distribution panel?

The SMARTFOX Pro requires 8TE (division units), while the Light Series only needs 5TE.

Can the energy manager be installed in a sub-distribution panel?

Yes, but the current transformers must be installed directly at the main service line and can be extended by a maximum of 15 meters.

Is programming knowledge required for commissioning?

No, but please note that the device must be installed and commissioned by qualified electrical technicians or specialists. Basic knowledge of electrical engineering and networking is required for configuration.

How do I configure the controller?

The controller can be configured directly using the on-screen keyboard or via a laptop or smartphone. However, configuration should generally be performed by trained electrical personnel. Instructions for the individual applications can be found in the download section.

How do I connect SMARTFOX to the internet and the monitoring system?

The energy manager can be connected to the Internet via LAN or Wi-Fi.

Does the SMARTFOX have a Wi-Fi interface?

Yes, the SMARTFOX Pro series has a Wi-Fi interface.

How do I connect the energy manager to my Wi-Fi?

How do I start the Wi-Fi access point?

The Wi-Fi access point (Wi-Fi AP) can be enabled in the main menu directly using the device's on-screen keyboard. Wi-Fi AP = ON

How do I connect to the Wi-Fi access point?

If the Wi-Fi AP is enabled on the device, SMARTFOX will broadcast a Wi-Fi network named "Smartfox_AP." Connect your laptop or smartphone to this Wi-Fi network.

Open a web browser and enter the IP address 192.168.250.181. You can now access the SMARTFOX via the web interface, configure settings, or control outputs.

Does the control system need to be connected to the internet?

No, an internet connection is not required for the energy manager to function. Certain functions, such as controlling battery storage systems, are carried out via Modbus TCP, i.e., over the network. However, an internet connection is required to use the full range of features offered by the free web portal (e.g., changing the charging mode remotely via the app).

Which ports are used by Monitoring / SMARTFOX?

SMARTFOX uses TCP port 5000 (LiveView, Settings…) and TCP port 80 (SD card upload; energy and power charts…)

Can I use the system without an internet connection?

No internet connection is required for basic energy management. If you need to read data from inverters or control a charging station via Modbus TCP, a local network is sufficient. To take full advantage of the free web portal’s features (e.g., changing the charging mode remotely via the app), an internet connection is required.

Can I connect SMARTFOX to the internet via Powerline?

In general, we recommend connecting the devices directly via an Ethernet cable. If this is not possible due to installation constraints, powerline adapters may be an option. However, since experience has shown that this technology is prone to errors, SMARTFOX cannot guarantee a constant network connection.

Can I connect SMARTFOX using a Wi-Fi repeater?

As a general rule, we recommend connecting the devices directly via an Ethernet cable. If this is not possible due to installation constraints, Wi-Fi repeaters may be an option. However, since experience has shown that this technology is prone to errors, SMARTFOX cannot guarantee a constant network connection.

6. Licenses

Do I need a license for equipment such as inverters, batteries, or heat pumps?

Since August 8, 2024, we have been offering the All-in-One Key, which replaces the existing licenses for batteries, inverters, and heat pumps. With the All-in-One Key, five inverters, one battery, and one heat pump are activated for an unlimited period—free of charge. This means that when you purchase a SMARTFOX Pro Energy Manager, you only incur a one-time investment cost and no ongoing expenses.

What if I've already activated a license?

For those who have already activated various licenses, the validity period will be extended from ten years to an indefinite period.

Is a license required for a charging station?

A Car Charger Key is now required to connect compatible charging stations. This unlocks all five charging points. The Car Charger Key is not required for SMARTFOX charging stations.

7. Inverters & Power Generation Systems

How many inverters can I connect to the SMARTFOX?

Up to 5 inverters can be connected directly to the SMARTFOX Pro. Up to 5 additional inverters can be integrated via a SMARTFOX Meter.

Which inverters are compatible with the SMARTFOX?

My inverter isn't listed—are there any alternatives for integrating the inverter?

Yes, if the inverter does not have a communication interface or if the device is not listed in our system, the inverters can be integrated using alternative methods.

 

The SMARTFOX Energy Meter can be used to measure the inverter's AC output and transmit the data to the web portal.

Does the control system work when the inverter is not connected?

Yes, all necessary measurements for controlling devices (heating elements, charging stations, etc.) are performed directly by the SMARTFOX. Therefore, integrating the inverter is not strictly necessary.

What is the inverter supposed to be connected to?

To view the production data from your PV system or battery storage unit in SMARTFOX Monitoring, the inverter must be integrated. This allows you to access all of your system's data in a single monitoring platform.

What interfaces are used to read data from and control the inverters?

Depending on the inverter, Modbus TCP (LAN/Wi-Fi) or Modbus RTU (RS-485) is used for communication.

SMARTFOX does not display PV values

Check whether the inverter can be accessed locally via the IP address stored on the SMARTFOX and whether this address is set as a static IP on the inverter. In addition, Modbus data output must be enabled on most inverters. The inverter and SMARTFOX must be connected to the same network.

SMARTFOX displays a connection error with the inverter

Check whether the inverter can be accessed locally via the IP address stored on the SMARTFOX and whether this address is set as a static IP on the inverter. In addition, Modbus data output must be enabled on most inverters. The inverter and SMARTFOX must be connected to the same network.

What do I need to keep in mind when integrating inverters?

SMARTFOX and the inverters must be connected to the same network or via RS485. Certain parameters must be configured on the inverters before the data can be read by the energy manager.

8. Complaints & More

How long is the warranty on the components?

The warranty for the components is valid for 2 years

How do I return a defective item?

The claims process is handled by the installer who performed the work. Claims are processed exclusively through the online form provided. Please fill out the form completely and accurately so that we can process your claim as quickly as possible.

My device is out of warranty. Can I still send it in for repair?

You can still send the devices in for inspection or repair. After inspection, we will provide you with a quote for repair or replacement. You will receive information on shipping costs and inspection fees after submitting the claim form. Please fill out the form completely and accurately so that we can process your request as quickly as possible. You can find the link to the form here.

How can I link the replacement device (SMARTFOX Energy Manager) to my existing account?

In the web portal or app, go to Settings > My Devices. Click Change MAC or Swap Device. Enter the MAC address of the replacement device. The data from your old device will be linked to the new device; this process may take up to one day. The replacement devices shipped to you are in their factory default state. Afterward, configure the required outputs and functions.

When does the warranty period for my device begin?

The warranty period begins when the device is put into service.

How long does the complaint process take?

Once the RMA request has been submitted in full, the device will typically be picked up within the next 1–2 business days. Delivery times depend on the pickup location (EU, third country—customs, etc.). Once we receive the device, we will process the request as quickly as possible.

Is an advance exchange possible?

Generally, defective devices are picked up and inspected. Once the test results have been evaluated, the device is repaired or a replacement is shipped.

Does the replacement unit need to be reconfigured?

All shipped devices are reset to their factory settings. After commissioning, the devices must be configured with the desired settings.

Will the data remain in the web portal after the replacement?

All data visible in the web portal will remain available and can be linked to the replacement device. In the web portal / app, go to Settings -> My Devices. Click Change MAC / Swap Device. Enter the MAC address of the replacement device. The data from your old device will be linked to the new device; this process may take up to one day. The replacement devices shipped are in their factory default state. Afterward, configure the required outputs and functions.

9. Web Portal & App

I didn't receive a verification email. What should I do?

Please contact our support team. We will check the email address on file and can have the verification link resent.

If you have forgotten your password, use the "Forgot Password" feature on the login screen.

Yes, the my.smartfox.at web portal and the SMARTFOX app (iOS/Android) use the same login credentials.
